Other Antivirus Options

If you're not running Windows XP (home or pro versions) as required by Norton AntiVirus 2007 or Norton Internet Security 2007, you have several options.

You can upgrade your subscription (LiveUpdate) if you already own Norton. And if you need to buy an antivirus for older operating systems, Symantec still sells Norton AntiVirus 2005. That's not a bad choice because with the subscription service you'll get plenty of essential protection. Symantec does not have a direct link to a product page but more information is available in the middle of this product page.

Other excellent antivirus products that support older Windows operating systems: Trend Micro 2006 , Security Shield Pro 2006, CA EZ eTrust 2007, BitDefender, and Kaspersky. If you are looking for a bargain priced solution, Security Shield is a good choice. BitDefender gets great reviews. Kaspersky is very popular with many technical folks both because of its quality and because it releases hourly updates. Kapersky is considered the vendor with the fastest respnse to new threats. CA and Trend are very reliable veterans with strong proven protection. Again, any of these top vendors provide strong protection.

Competing Internet Security Products

Competition in the "internet security" realm includes McAfee VirusScan Plus , CA eTrust Internet Security Suite, PC Security Shield, BitDefender and Kaspersky.

I have used CA and McAfee for extended periods.

CA will do everything anyone could want. I didn't like the user menus but that's just me. I had a few minor issues running it (it kept trying to block my pop mail connection) but I was able to fix that through the menus. If you use it and like it, stay with it or upgrade to the new version. Time-Warner gives CA to it's cable modem broadband customers (in my area, anyway). That's quite an endorsement.

McAfee is very, very nice. If I didn't use Norton, I'd choose McAfee so it's my second choice. It's quiet and I hardly notice it's there. It does pester me at boot time about the SPAM settings. That's because I do not use Outlook for mail and it seems to think everyone does.

BitDefender is hot; Kapersky, too. I haven't used either yet.
